I use a variety of tools to evaluate reading, writing and executive function to identify areas of need and track a student’s progress.  Assessment is an ongoing process as I work with a student.  An initial assessment during the first few sessions establishes a baseline with every session providing an opportunity for observation of progress which informs our work.

​I employ the Orton-Gillingham (OG) methodology using The Wilson Reading
System (WRS) program as the basis for my work. OG is an accepted structural literacy program grounded in the science of reading. This methodology is supplemented with additional activities and approaches to strengthen proficiency including reading content that matches the level and interests of my student.​

Writing

I work with students in all aspects of expository, persuasive and descriptive, narrative and research essay composition, review and editing as well as the mechanics of grammar and proofreading.  I bring varied practical strategies to improve writing skills and use a blend of professional development resources and strategies.​

Math

I work with students to identify learning gaps and develop the conceptual
understanding needed to master mathematical thinking and build confidence. Students’ learning gaps are filled as we construct a strong foundation from elementary math through pre-algebra.

Executive Function

I support students as they develop their executive function skills. Together
we use techniques to identify areas of weakness that can impact mental flexibility and self-regulation, which are critical for learning and development. I teach study skills, organization and time management that enable students to plan projects, get started and follow through to completion.

I work with my students to appreciate the interaction of learning and emotions as we develop strategies to support growth.  As a learning specialist with a background in clinical therapy, I bring a deep understanding and compassion that enables students to take risks, learn from mistakes and gain the confidence to be successful academically, emotionally and socially.  I do this by building a relationship of trust in a secure environment where students can open themselves up to learning.
