Assessment

Check & Evaluate
Picture
I use a variety of screening tools for reading, writing, and executive function to identify areas of need and track a student’s progress.  Assessment is an ongoing process as I work with a student.  An initial assessment during the first few sessions establishes a baseline with every session providing an opportunity for observation of progress which informs our work.

Reading

Structure . Understanding . Interests . Reading Revolution

The Wilson Reading System (WRS) is the basis for my work. WRS is a structured program based on phonological coding research and Orton-Gillingham principles. WRS uses word structure and recognition, word and sentence level reading and understanding, and spelling of irregular and high frequency words. This is supplemented with techniques of Reading Revolution and reading content that matches the level and interests of each student.

Writing

Techniques . Resources . Review and Editing . Strategies
Picture
I work with students in all aspects of expository, persuasive and descriptive essay composition, review and editing as well as the mechanics of grammar and proofreading. I bring varied practical strategies to improve writing skills and use a blend of techniques and resources informed by the 6 + Traits of Writing, the Landmark School Outreach Program for Professional Development, Purdue University Online Writing Lab, augmented by additional professional development resources.

Executive Function

Planning . Organizing . Prioritizing . Shifting Memorizing . Checking

The interrelated executive functions of working memory, mental flexibility and self-regulation are critical for learning and development and making healthy choices. They include study skills, organization and time management, project planning, initiation and completion. I draw upon the work of Dawson and Guare, Sklar, and the nationally acclaimed Landmark School.

Interaction of Learning and Emotions

Managing Anxiety .  Emotions . Interaction of Learning
Picture
Many students come to an Educational Therapist with anxiety that is the result of school and social difficulties.  The therapeutic environment allows students to explore ways that the interaction of learning and emotions impact them.  Together we investigate strategies for managing anxiety and other emotions so they support learning.

Parent Support and Academic Advocacy

Special Education . Idea . Learning . Speech . Teaching .  Alternative . Accommodation . Intervention .  Disabilities . Therapy

I work along with parents, teachers, and other allied professionals to support students’ educational needs as they impact many areas of students’ lives.
